One Word for 2015

Every year, right around the last of the year, my husband and I pray and ask God for a word, sort of a “theme”, for the coming year. We ask Him to give us clear direction and for some reason, it has always boiled down to a single word. Three years ago, the word was “Transition”. That year, we moved and had several things happen that required us trusting the Lord through transitions in our life.

The next year, it was “Intimacy.” We spent a lot of time growing not only in our personal relationships and our marriage, but also in our intimacy with the Lord. Many challenges came our way that tested us in the area of intimacy and we grew so much!

Last year, the word was “Focus.”

We felt the Lord was telling us both to begin to focus in on our calling and purpose and make some very difficult decisions to let go of things in our life that we loved, but felt God was calling us away from. He has adjusted our lives in amazing ways as we have focused on His plan for us. I am back to teaching fitness, speaking, writing and He even opened a door for me to return to radio part time at 106.9 The Light! Wow, the focus has been hard, and we’ve had to let go of some things we loved, but the rewards are truly overwhelming!

We began to pray at the beginning of December for the word God would have for us for 2015 and we had a few words swirling around as we focused in on what it might be. We talk and pray through this, but when the right word is spoken, we both just know it’s “the one!”

At the beginning of the month, we had a meeting with Ryan, one of our church elders, where we shared our story of God’s grace and transformation in our lives. As we shared our story with him, he looked at us intently and said, “As you all have shared, I have been hearing the word ‘establish’ over and over again in my heart. God has really established you and will continue to do so as you follow Him.” Ryan had no idea we had been praying for a word from the Lord for 2015! But, as we left our meeting, we looked at each other with grins on our faces,

“So…is that our word for 2015?” As we’ve prayed about it, we definitely feel it is.

I was in my quiet time the other day and came across Psalm 90:17, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us, yes, establish the work of our hands.” I immediately texted it to my husband and said, “Honey, we have a verse for the year now, too!”

We look forward to hearing this “word” from God each year and as we look back, we see how faithful He has been in our lives as we focus on His purposes and plans for our lives. Somehow, having this word helps us to do just that. I believe God delights in giving us guidance and showing us what to focus in on each year! His faithfulness in this is proof to us that this is a tradition we will continue for the rest of our lives together.

As we begin 2015, our prayer for your family is that you would seek God’s guidance and trust Him to show you the way this year. He has great plans for you — not to harm you, but to give you hope and a future! (Jeremiah 29:11)

I know He takes great delight in showing you the way.

If God were to give your family a word for 2015, what might it be? Would you be willing to ask Him to reveal this to you in the coming days?

"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” John 16:13

“For You are my Rock and my Fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me.” Psalm 31:3

  2. Heidi Randall Valardi says:

I'm encouraged Leslie- we've got to get our word! 🙂

  3. Leslie Nease says:

Yes, ma'am! So thankful it encouraged you, my friend. I will pray for you as you seek Him!

  4. Awesome! I do a similar thing with a hashtag for the year — last year it was #better — this year #restoration, #liveonpurpose! It has really kept me focused on God's purpose in my life! Thanks for sharing!

  5. We each have a different word in our family: Drew is is "thrive", I am "unashamed", Lindsey (15) is "encouragement" and Micah (9) is "contentment."

  6. Wow! I think I do this too but it takes me awhile to figure out the word cuz I'm slow now due to my Brain Injury accident in 2007. This year's word looks like "future" & last year's was "change". It amazes me that you refernced the verse Jeremiah 29:11 above so it confirms the word too, Thanks

  7. Suzanne Abodaher says:

I have been doing this for a couple years and this year my word is Renovate and on the first as I was praying and reading a devotional my word was confirmed and a verse shown to me (Romans 12:2). God is good!

  8. Leslie Nease says:

You're welcome, Vonnie! So thankful your "word" was confirmed in His Word! 🙂
