Unsung Heroes: Being a Role Model Outside the Spotlight

I bet most of you have never heard about Jonathan slaying a giant in the Bible, yet here it is:

“And there was a again a war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was descended from the giants.  And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David's brother, struck him down.” —2 Samuel 21:20 – 21

Notice who Jonathan is: David’s nephew.  Shimea, or Shammah (as he is called in other places in the Bible), was Jesse’s third son. Shimea was one that passed by Samuel and was rejected. He was also a soldier watching his little brother slay Goliath. He did not criticize David as his older brothers did, but I’m sure he was there listening to their words.

We don’t know Shimea’s  thoughts or attitude towards his little brother, but I would say that his son Jonathan, this nephew of David’s, found an example that he could follow!

Challenge: who’s watching you? There are so many eyes watching you, dear Christian, and we often do not even realize it. How it must have thrilled David’s heart to see this young man slaying his giant. And even though he certainly did not go down in history like his uncle, he is recorded in the Greatest Book on earth! God’s kingdom is made up of a host of “Jonathans” — unsung heroes, who are out there battling giants and aren’t even known or noticed by most of us, much less the world.

Are you an unsung hero to your children, husband, or friends? Perhaps you are not doing the great things, but if you are doing the right things, that will make all the difference! More often, it’s not what we do or say that affects others, but how we live that will speak the loudest.

“Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”  —Proverbs 31:25
