A Faith That Never Fails

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.” —2 Timothy 2:13

Unshakable Faith vs. Hanging by a Thread Faith

Over the summer my family was invited to enjoy a day of water sports and boating on the lake with some friends.

The water was choppy that day and with each wake that came upon us from the passing speed boats came a big thump and jolt of our own boat, as well as a scream from my four year old son. He clung to the floor of the boat, certain that his death was near. I reclined on the padded seats working on my tan, trying to hide my laughter.

You see, my son had very little faith in the strength of our boat as we hit those large bumps in the water. I however, having grown up water skiing and spending my days on ski boats (not to mention being thirty-four years wiser) knew that we were perfectly safe. I had complete faith that those wakes that were tossing us side to side were merely bumps and the boat was certainly strong enough to withhold them. I tried to convince him that he could trust the boat but he chose to remain at foot level.

The Faith we Stand On

Did the strength of either of our faith make any difference in the strength of the boat that day?

Of course not. The boat’s strength was not moved by how much faith either of us had put into it on that particular day. It wasn’t weakened by my son’s doubt nor was it strengthened by my confidence and trust in it.

Just as the boat was immovable and never swayed in its ability to bring us safely home, Christ remains our strength even when our faith waivers.

It’s Christ’s faith we stand on! It’s His strength that gets us through and not our own. Christ’s life was one constant stream of unwavering faith. Having the power to abandon the rescue at any moment, he continued on in humility and perfect faith to fulfill God’s redeeming plan. Knowing the pain that was to come he plead with his father to let the cup pass from his lips (Luke 22:42). And as the answer became clear that he was to be beaten, mocked, and stricken with sorrow at the separation of perfect union with his Father, he remained faithful on our behalf. This has become our record. This is now our strength.

His Record of Faith is Ours

Even in the weakest times of doubt He remains our strength, holding us up out of the water, confidently taking each blow from the wakes that life is passing onto us, all the while being unmoved and perfectly safe.

My friends, your strong faith, or lack thereof, is not connected to a cosmic meter of God's grace. He does not dole out his love and faithfulness based on how well you are trusting. Believe that he loves you and is holding on to you whether you are lounging about, enjoying a time of confident faith or clinging to the bottom of the boat waiting for the ride to be over. His perfect faith is counted as yours.

Has there been a time in your life that you have recognized his unwavering faithfulness to you despite your hanging by a thread faith in him?
